Apologies, I thought that part was obvious. My goal in writing a piece about the next century was to talk about the next century and the goal we have to set to get there. Obviously cars are going to be with us as we move towards a future when they mostly aren't (that should have been clear in the section where I talked about why I have a car). There is no instant switch, just lots of long, hard conversations about what infrastructure to build, and what infrastructure to tear down.

All that said, we must demonize cars now if we want to have any chance in the 100 years of moving past the way they destroy lives, communities, climate, and livability. Framing cars as essential, even in the short term, is to tolerate the hundreds of thousands of lives they destroy each year and the millions of lives they will kill due carbon output in the coming decade.
