I don’t know what’s better or worse, but I do know that software can’t help but be reductionist, categorizing, filtering, and labeling. It’s the only way it knows how to deal with variation. Humans tend to do this too, producing similar harms to computing. While I don’t have a solution, I do think that ensuring that everyone is aware that computing can do the same harms that people do by ignoring diversity, we might collectively avoid some of this harm.
