I think that’s a great question. It’s fundamentally about whether there should be some gatekeeper somewhere that has authority, as opposed to it being completely peer-driven. I think there are some advantages to the pure peer (ooh, that’s fun to say) model, in that there’s no social or organizational process needed to transfer power. But the disadvantages might be difficulties with academia accepting a model of trust that is purely distributed, rather than authoritative.
