I’m fortunate to be in a community that has advocated strongly to publishers to allow name changes; all of my names are now up to date on prior publications. But in that brief period where that wasn’t true, I didn’t even put a symbol. I just listed my correct name, and had a note that said that publishers had incorrect records.
