Indeed! What you’re describing was the premise behind the field of “visual programming languages”, the first of which started to emerge in the 1970’s. In these languages, there is no text, just symbols, arranged according to visual grammars, with special editors to enforce those grammars, much like block-based editors. Prograph was one of the first commercially popular visual programming languages. Yahoo! Pipes was one of the more recently popular ones.
