Thanks for your analysis Kerry. I remain more optimistic than you about the change that’s possible from higher education. Colleges and universities prepare most of the teachers in the United States, and teachers determine much of the culture that youth experience around STEM and computing. With the right teacher preparation, we could see change in just decades.

I also remain more optimistic about the more narrow challenge of changing the culture of higher education. Women are pursuing CS in large numbers across the country—they’re just leaving it, or graduating, entering industry, and then leaving industry. If we can change the culture of higher education CS and the software industry, they’ll stop leaving.
